"In Soviet Russia.."

Yakov Smirnoff ( no, not the vodka) is a comedian who emigrated to U.S from the USSR. "In Soviet Russia" is a joke series originated by the comedian. The joke is an example of antimetabole. The joke is old, it was popular in the late 80's and eventually fell out of fashion in the 90's. Nowadays, it has been brought up to life among various online communities and in social media and it has become a meme.

The joke series contracts the differences between for example, the U.S and Soviet Russia. Here's a couple of funny? examples;

In America, you break law.
In Soviet Russia, law breaks you!
In America, your work determines your marks.
In Soviet Russia, Marks determines your work!
In America, you assassinate presidents.
In Soviet Russia, presidents assassinate you!
In America, you watch Big Brother.
In Soviet Russia, Big Brother watches you!

These jokes have been used in popular TV animation shows such as, the King of the hill, Family guy and the Simpsons.

The reason why the joke was reborn in 2005 is unclear, but since that it has become a meme and people are making their own versions of it and distributing them all around the various internet communities and channels.
