Gangnam Style: The Unexplained Phenomenon

When taking a retrospective view of the highlights of 2012, one of the greatest success stories was that of South Korean solo artist Psy, best known for his #1 hit Gangnam Style. If you had heard of Psy before July last year, then you were undoubtedly some South Korean enthusiast who's room was plastered with Hello Kitty posters and your time was spent learning the infamous dance to ensure you were "ahead of the crowd".

As mentioned in an earlier blog, Gangnam Style was the first Youtube video ever to breach the 1,000,000,000 views mark, which is an incredible achievement for any artist, but especially one who has never charted #1 in any foreign country before the song in question was released.

Psy has came under intense scrutiny and became a rather controversial act. It was revealed at the end of last year that before he reached global stardom, Psy was strictly opposed to the USA's foreign policy, in particular towards their wars within Afghanistan and Iraq. Well, when I say strictly opposed, here's an example of how just opposed; he sings in one of this songs "Kill those ******* Yankees torturing American captives". Now, I may be reading into the situation too much, but I can't help but feel that our man Psy has fallen victim to hypocrisy, considering this same man chose to purchase a $1.25 million condo in Los Angeles (paid for in cash may I add), and issued an apology for this previous Anti-American songs. Clearly, the American Dream and way of life was far more appealing than life on the streets of Gangnam, South Korea. However, i'm sure that the American Government have not forgotten his ill sentiment towards their soldiers in the field. It would have been very interesting to be present for his performance at the White House Christmas Function (oh, how I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that three minutes nearly Barrack Obama's table...)

Moving on, here is the infamous Gangnam Style!
